POST 40 HISTORY

  Brief history of Post 40

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans, servicemembers and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States

In May of 1919, an announcement of the formation of a national group calling itself the American Legion was planned for Danville. On June 19, 1919, in the Grand Army of The Republic Hall, 40 World War I vets met to elect officers. A. L. Wintersteen was voted to represent them as post commander, and they officially adopted the name "Frank W. Sidler" Post 40.

First Lieutenant Franklin William Sidler was killed in action on September 13, 1918 near Saint Mihiel France. He is buried at Saint Mihiel American Cemetery and Memorial Thiaucourt-Regnieville Department de Meurthe-et-Moselle Lorraine, France Plot: Section D Row 11 Grave 35
